Gender Affirming Hormone Replacement Therapy Q & A

What is Gender-Affirming Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) involves the use of hormones to help better align a person's gender identity with their physical appearance.

Estrogen, testosterone/androgen blockers and progesterone are the large groups of therapies that are typically used in estrogen-based GAHT. No singular gender identity is required for estrogen-based GAHT, but it is most commonly prescribed to trans women, transfeminine, nonbinary, and intersex people.

Testosterone is the main treatment of testosterone-based gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT). No singular gender identity is required for testosterone-based GAHT, but it is commonly prescribed to trans men, transmasculine, nonbinary, and intersex people.

How do I know if GAHT is right for me?

Gender-affirming hormone therapy is not necessary for everyone who experiences gender dysphoria, but it can be a life-saving treatment for some. GAHT can help some transgender or nonbinary people reach certain goals and enhance aspects of how they look and feel.

It’s normal to have questions about GAHT, and it’s recommended to work with a medical professional who is experienced in this area of practice.

Gender-affirming hormone therapy is a personal decision. At Old Greenbelt Family Health, you have the support and guidance you need as you consider how this treatment might align with your overall goals and needs.

What should I expect with hormone replacement therapy?

Anyone who receives hormone replacement therapy, whether to restore optimal hormonal balance or as part of gender-affirming medical care, should expect to receive personalized treatment that always places your health as a central focus.

Supplemental hormones can come in the form of injections, creams, vaginal rings, patches, or tablets. It often takes a period of trial and error to find the right balance of hormones to meet your specific needs.
